Delicious Ways to Use Tahini

Tahini is one of my favorite ingredients in the pantry! It’s so versatile that it can be used in savory cooking to add an earthy flavor. Or added to desserts for a sweet and salty combo. I’m going to share some of my favorite ways to add it to your cooking, but first:

What exactly is Tahini?

Made from ground sesame seeds, tahini is a creamy, nutty paste. It’s a staple condiment in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines. And it is full of healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. It’s also a good source of protein, boasting around 3 grams per tablespoon.

In most grocery stores, tahini is located with other condiments (usually near the peanut butter). Or possibly in the international foods aisle (it usually comes in a glass or plastic jar, sometimes even a squeeze tube).

While some brands of tahini will tell you to refrigerate after opening, most are shelf-stable.

Hummus

One of the most popular ways to use tahini would be in hummus. In fact, my first time hearing of tahini was when I wanted to make my own hummus. I had to try a few recipes and change a few ingredients before I found what worked best for me. But there are so many amazing recipes out there, and it’s so easy to customize to your liking.

Salad Dressings and Sauces

There are so many different ways to use tahini in sauces or dressings. And the best part is, most recipes are super quick and easy. This creamy tahini dressing from Cookie + Kate is one of my favorites! And I use this yogurt tahini sauce from Olives for Dinner to add to wraps or whatever else I can think of.

Sub it for your Nut Butter

You can substitute tahini for other kinds of nut butter in some recipes. I mix it with maple syrup and salt and substitute it for peanut butter in smoothies and oatmeal. Or you could even use it on apple slices or toast. My tahini stuffed dates are one of my favorite ways to use tahini. But the possibilities are endless!

Use it in Desserts and Baking

I love to add a tahini swirl to cookies and brownies! It adds just the right amount of salty savoriness, to balance out the sweetness. I’ve also added it to homemade chocolate bars, barks, and truffles. But you could try it in fudges, cakes, muffins or as a topping for ice cream.

These are just a few ways to use tahini. But it’s really only limited to your own creativity. Please be sure to comment below your favorite ways or ideas to use this superfood.
